House of Bones (2010) Review
Corin Nemec (Mansquito, SS Doomtrooper) co-stars alongside Charisma Carpenter (The Expendables, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as TV ghost hunters that enter a reportedly haunted house that may prove to be the death of them in the SyFy Original "House of Bones" directed by Jeffery Scott Lando who also is responsible for the SyFy Original film "Goblin" which is the first and up until now only SyFy Original to receive a good review from The Liberal Dead, perhaps it's time to place Mr. Lando on my directors to watch radar.
Regular readers of The Liberal Dead know very well my feelings on most of the films that SyFy Churns out each year at an alarming rate. With that said I believe in giving credit where credit is due earlier this month I reviewed "Goblin" another film directed by Jeffery Scott Lando for the SyFy Channel and found myself pleasantly surprised when it was good, fast forward up to last night when I decided to give "House of Bones" a watch without knowing who it was directed by or that it was in fact a SyFy related film.
Chances are if you enjoyed such titles as "House on Haunted Hill", "Burnt Offerings", or even "The Amityville Horror" you will walk away from "House of Bones" satisfied and maybe even authentically impressed I know I was when the credits rolled and I found myself sitting on my couch thinking to myself "Wow that was a awesome haunted house flick". From the very beginning of "House of Bones" I found myself sucked into the story after its silly almost "Creepshow" feeling intro involving a group of children and a lost baseball that was signed by Babe Ruth that has been hit into the dreaded "House of Bones" and must be retrieved by a scared shitless kid, no I did not accidently switch channels to "The Sandlot" but this intro does do a wonderful job at setting the mood, if I worked for SyFy I would of saved this one for October as it would make an remarkable Halloween movie.

Not only is the script solid and fun putting off a "Are You Afraid of The Dark", "Goosebumps" vibe only more geared towards adults, but it also features very believable acting and all who were involved with this film did a really god job portraying their various roles. I was very impressed with the level of acting and production found in this film specially once I discovered it was another SyFy Original.
The special effects were also done very well with a little blood and gore here and there and some great uses of CG I was very pleased with the blend of practical and CG effects something SyFy really does seem to be getting better at.
Is this a new leaf for SyFy ? Or is this just proof of the ability of Jeffery Scott Lando? I guess only time will tell personally I'm hoping it's a bit of both. But one thing is for sure I really enjoyed this movie and recommend any fan of stories involving haunted houses give this one a go.

On behalf of The Liberal Dead I give "House of Bones" 7 out of 10 and the award for best made for TV horror I've seen in a very long time.
